Gitmo Detainees Coming to Virginia, Local Dems Freak

Obama supporters in Alexandria, Virginia suddenly don't think closing Gitmo is such a great idea

Rich, thick irony. Normal people think it's a good idea to keep terrorists on a faraway island, in a prison controlled by the United States military. Liberals disagree, for no readily apparent reason, and want Gitmo closed. So President Obama says he will close it next year.

But closing the base raises the question that any grade school child (but apparently no liberals) might ask; what do we do with the terrorists who want to kill us and destroy our cities? Barack Obama (in another manchurian president decision) thinks we should bring them to the United States to be nearer to our people and population centers. The administration has previously floated the idea of bringing them to South Carolina, but the left didn't care about that - after all, South Carolina is a red state.

But this morning, the liberal Democrats who run Alexandria, Virginia open their beloved Washington Post to find that their beloved president wants to bring terrorists to Northern Virginia. And the wailing from the NIMBY lefties began.

An outcry is growing in Alexandria over a prospect no one seems to like: terrorist suspects in the suburbs.

The historic, vibrant community less than 10 miles from the White House markets itself as a "federal friendly zone." But it has turned decidedly unfriendly to news that the Obama administration might move some detainees from their highly controlled military fortress at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Alexandria to stand trial at the federal courthouse.

"We would be absolutely opposed to relocating Guantanamo prisoners to Alexandria," Mayor William D. Euille (D) said. "We would do everything in our power to lobby the president, the governor, the Congress and everyone else to stop it. We've had this experience, and it was unpleasant. Let someone else have it."

The mayor glibly says, "Let someone else have it." Let's have him give us the name of a city or town who should get these murderous thugs. Or, better yet, let's give him a choice. Would you rather have them stay at Guantanamo or move them to Alexandria? And, of course his answer, along with the answer of every other mayor in the country, would be to leave the bastards in Cuba. And why is that?

The 2006 death penalty trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, who was convicted of conspiring in the terrorist attacks of Sept, 11, 2001, turned the neighborhood into a virtual encampment, with heavily armed agents, rooftop snipers, bomb-sniffing dogs, blocked streets, identification checks and a fleet of television satellite trucks. . . .

City officials and some legislators are concerned that terror trials would take years, shut down roads and cost millions and could invite attacks from terrorist sympathizers. . . .

Putting detainees on trial in Alexandria would mean moving them from an isolated island prison 90 miles from Florida to a neighborhood brimming with residents, thousands of federal employees and the new Westin Alexandria Hotel 190 feet from the courthouse door. . . .

"The concern is that someone from the terrorist side of things would want to make some statement in conjunction with the trials," said Branigan, a former senior Air Force anti-terrorism officer. . . .

"I've never agreed with people who say 'not in my back yard,' but there are just too many people around here," said Jim Boulton, president of the unit owners association at the Caryle Towers condominium complex, which has been trying to get the government to remove security barriers left over from the Moussaoui trial. "They need to find someplace else."

This is what you get when you vote for change for change's sake. There is no reason to bring terrorists to the United States, but Obama is doing so simply because Bush did not. Obama could just decide that Gitmo is a better place to house these guys, but announce that he will run the place better than Bush did. Fine. Have at it. But when Eric Holder says that when Gitmo is closed, some detainees will be released into American cities and the others will be housed in Liberal cities, the last thing I want to hear from the Liberals, who voted for Obama, is how they don't want terrorists in their neighborhood. You wanted change. Here is your frickin' change.

Why would this surprise anyone?

Jim on 2009-03-25 12:32:46

Alexandria is nothing short of San Francisco on the Potomac. Arlington County, of which Alexandria is a part, voted Obama in with almost 72% of the vote. I think they should move all of the prisoners from Gitmo up to Alexandria for some true liberal compassion.

Bill Dupray on 2009-03-25 13:10:39

I think technically Alexandria is an independent city and not technically part of Arlington County, but they are contiguous and you are right, they are so liberal, they make the Socialists blush in envy.

writergrrl on 2009-03-31 16:54:28

Jim,

Alexandria is not part of Arlington County. It is an independant city which answers only to itself, no larger county.

The issues raised by the mayor are the issues that any community would face under the same circumstances. They should find a max security prison in a more isolated area, farther from residents and businesses and fancy new hotels.

Surely there's a jail out in the middle of a corn field somewhere...

dusanmal on 2009-04-01 00:36:46

And why would you treat farmers of those corn fields as a less important human beings than the city folk? Also, why wouldn't you think that those farmers and their families would protest and oppose terrorist in their village, particularly as most rural areas have voted against Obama...

If in the USA, terrorists should be located in a jail in the city with highest support for Obama. People who have mostly voted for Obama have caused terrorist relocation and should have the consequences.

Maybe they could be sent to Fairfax Co...they could be on the faculty at the Islamic Saudi Academy.

Bill Dupray on 2009-03-25 13:27:13

Maybe they are alumni.

Stevie on 2009-03-26 09:57:58

I thought those guys weren't "terrorists" anymore!?!! Funny how they get labeled like that by the Libs when things start getting personal. Hmmm. I also thought these detained delicate misunderstood souls need justice - what a better place for them to have their glorious "fair shake" than at the center of American power, by those so concerned for their care? I think it's perfect. How dare you complain about your traffic jams and loss of business when these people's human rights are in jeopordy!!! (You shouldn't be driving a car anyway - walk, or ride a bike you consumptive monster!)

/sarc off

This is just like the Nantucket windmills... YOU need to accept and support wind energy, just don't let it mess up the view from my mansion!

antne on 2009-03-26 11:08:56

HAHAHA, chickens come home to roost.

avery on 2009-03-27 17:06:40

Naturally as a Fairfax resident I am hating this a lot, but on the other hand I will enjoy ALL the discomfort it causes in those around me in my heavy kool-aid neighborhood. I hope to concern troll them relentlessly.

davga on 2009-03-28 23:16:29

I couldn't believe it when I first heard about the BO administration's move to close the detention center at GITMO. My first thought was..."IF not GITMO, then where?" Today I have my answer. And it seems very fitting, in an ironic way. OK, so this makes me chuckle, but at the same time it would not surprise me if the venue was changed all of a sudden.

  • Rep. Altmire confirms: NO

Nancy has about run out of "yes" votes: Congressman Jason Altmire will vote against the latest version of health care reform when the U.S. House of Representatives votes on the bill this weekend. Altmire confirmed that he has decided to vote no in a telephone conversation with KDKA Political Editor Jon Delano. The McCandless Democrat is expected to post a statement on his website later today.

  • JIP: Obama Approval Under Disapproval on RCP

Tough to be Barry: Real Clear Politics, or RCP for short, is a news site that averages approval/disapproval polls together, forming a very non-partisan system. For the last year and change, I have closely watched the approval of the President. Slowly but surely, it kept going lower and lower and lower. The President was at his peak on January 29, 2009 with an approval of 63.5 and a disapproval of only 19.3, a 44.2% difference. From the beginning of March to the end of June, Obama's approval/disapproval held moderately steady. But then it happened. The President began calling for radical reforms to the American Health Care System. While reform is needed, this "change" that the President was peddling did not sit well with the American people.

  • Will House recon bill surive intact in Senate? ...

Very clear. Toast: FTA: Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said Thursday that it is unlikely the Senate will be able to pass a health care reconciliation bill unchanged from what the House passes. Conrad said the Senate Parliamentarian has declined to make rulings on several issues in the bill that Republicans are likely to challenge under the “Byrd rule.” That rule states that, among other things, every provision of a budget reconciliation bill must have a budget impact and cannot be “extraneous.” “Although we’ve spent many, many hours with the Parliamentarian, some things he has not yet rendered a conclusion” on, Conrad said. “He wants to hear from both sides before he does.” Conrad continued: “Do I expect there will be some additional Byrd rule challenges that will be upheld? Yeah. I do.”

  • Another flip from Yes to No: Rep. Michael Arcur...

Rep. Mike Arcuri (D., N.Y.), a sophomore who had a tough go of it in 2008, will vote nay on Obamacare, both on the House floor and in the Rules Committee. The Rules vote is symbolic, since Democrats outnumber Republicans there two-to-one. But the floor vote could go either way. It is obviously a blow to Pelosi's chances of hitting 216.

  • Update on CBO: Corrupt Dem leaders touting unof...

Thanks to Avery for the heads-up on today's atrocity rolling off Capitol Hill.
Ranking Republican Paul Ryan responds to an NRO query about the news this morning: “The Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that there is currently no official cost estimate. Yet House Democrats are touting to the press — and spinning for partisan gain — numbers that have not been released and are impossible to confirm.
Boy, a final official number that came in over a trillion bucks would really bite them in the a**.

  • McCain's lead over Hayworth shrinks to 7

Johnny Mac is also under the all-important 50% support level.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely Arizona GOP Primary voters shows McCain ahead 48% to 41%. Three percent (3%) favor another candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided. Following the announcement that Sarah Palin would campaign for his reelection, McCain opened up a 53% to 31% lead over Hayworth in January. The two men were in a near tie in November.
By my math, McCain's lead shrunk from 21 to 7 in two months. Hmmm.

  • CBO: Obamacare costs $940 billion

And in the world of Washington speak, somehow spending that much cash actually lowers the deficit by $130 billion. I have a better idea. How about we just not spend $940 billion in the first place? After all, if you are trying to trim your budget, you don't go buying a Lamborghini on a credit card. One more thing. Isn't it funny how CBO can score a bill without an actual bill. Hmmm . . .

  • USA Today editors: The Slaughter Rule is a 'gim...

Keep in mind USA Today wholeheartedly supports this health care takeover, but even they are disturbed by "deeming" a bill passed without a vote in the House.
[House] leaders are mulling a rule that would allow the chamber to "deem" the Senate's version of health legislation as passed, without actually having to vote on it. Imagine how useful this trick would be in daily life. You could make unpopular decisions without actually appearing to make them. That excruciating Thanksgiving dinner at your brother-in-law's? You "deemed" that you attended. . . . It's understandable that some House Democrats wouldn't want to cast a direct vote on the Senate bill . . . before moving to change it. But a procedure this transparently gimmicky just adds to the cynicism surrounding the bill and opens it up to unnecessary court challenges.

  • Biden bombs at Correspondents' Dinner

Biden is funnier when he isn't trying to be funny. This stuff is so lame, he should have gotten the hook. More, if you can stand them, at the link. - "I just got back from five days in the Middle East. It's great to be back to a place where a boom in housing construction is a good thing." - "Liz Cheney is here tonight. Liz has been on a tear. Now she's questioning if Tom Brady is a Patriot." Meh, said the crowd. "What the hell, it was worth a try." - On moving to Washington: "I voted for public housing all my career -- never realized how good it actually is!"

  • Shocker: Boxer now trails Campbell in CA Senate...

Sure, it's within the margin of error, but Campbell is leading. The pollster moves the race to "toss-up."
In hypothetical match ups with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D) in the general election, Campbell leads Boxer, 44% to 43%, while Boxer leads Fiorina, 45% to 44%, and tops DeVore, 45% to 41%. Both findings are within the survey's margin of error.
