Gitmo Detainees Coming to Virginia, Local Dems Freak

Obama supporters in Alexandria, Virginia suddenly don't think closing Gitmo is such a great idea

Rich, thick irony. Normal people think it's a good idea to keep terrorists on a faraway island, in a prison controlled by the United States military. Liberals disagree, for no readily apparent reason, and want Gitmo closed. So President Obama says he will close it next year.

But closing the base raises the question that any grade school child (but apparently no liberals) might ask; what do we do with the terrorists who want to kill us and destroy our cities? Barack Obama (in another manchurian president decision) thinks we should bring them to the United States to be nearer to our people and population centers. The administration has previously floated the idea of bringing them to South Carolina, but the left didn't care about that - after all, South Carolina is a red state.

But this morning, the liberal Democrats who run Alexandria, Virginia open their beloved Washington Post to find that their beloved president wants to bring terrorists to Northern Virginia. And the wailing from the NIMBY lefties began.

An outcry is growing in Alexandria over a prospect no one seems to like: terrorist suspects in the suburbs.

The historic, vibrant community less than 10 miles from the White House markets itself as a "federal friendly zone." But it has turned decidedly unfriendly to news that the Obama administration might move some detainees from their highly controlled military fortress at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Alexandria to stand trial at the federal courthouse.

"We would be absolutely opposed to relocating Guantanamo prisoners to Alexandria," Mayor William D. Euille (D) said. "We would do everything in our power to lobby the president, the governor, the Congress and everyone else to stop it. We've had this experience, and it was unpleasant. Let someone else have it."

The mayor glibly says, "Let someone else have it." Let's have him give us the name of a city or town who should get these murderous thugs. Or, better yet, let's give him a choice. Would you rather have them stay at Guantanamo or move them to Alexandria? And, of course his answer, along with the answer of every other mayor in the country, would be to leave the bastards in Cuba. And why is that?

The 2006 death penalty trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, who was convicted of conspiring in the terrorist attacks of Sept, 11, 2001, turned the neighborhood into a virtual encampment, with heavily armed agents, rooftop snipers, bomb-sniffing dogs, blocked streets, identification checks and a fleet of television satellite trucks. . . .

City officials and some legislators are concerned that terror trials would take years, shut down roads and cost millions and could invite attacks from terrorist sympathizers. . . .

Putting detainees on trial in Alexandria would mean moving them from an isolated island prison 90 miles from Florida to a neighborhood brimming with residents, thousands of federal employees and the new Westin Alexandria Hotel 190 feet from the courthouse door. . . .

"The concern is that someone from the terrorist side of things would want to make some statement in conjunction with the trials," said Branigan, a former senior Air Force anti-terrorism officer. . . .

"I've never agreed with people who say 'not in my back yard,' but there are just too many people around here," said Jim Boulton, president of the unit owners association at the Caryle Towers condominium complex, which has been trying to get the government to remove security barriers left over from the Moussaoui trial. "They need to find someplace else."

This is what you get when you vote for change for change's sake. There is no reason to bring terrorists to the United States, but Obama is doing so simply because Bush did not. Obama could just decide that Gitmo is a better place to house these guys, but announce that he will run the place better than Bush did. Fine. Have at it. But when Eric Holder says that when Gitmo is closed, some detainees will be released into American cities and the others will be housed in Liberal cities, the last thing I want to hear from the Liberals, who voted for Obama, is how they don't want terrorists in their neighborhood. You wanted change. Here is your frickin' change.

Why would this surprise anyone?

Jim on 2009-03-25 12:32:46

Alexandria is nothing short of San Francisco on the Potomac. Arlington County, of which Alexandria is a part, voted Obama in with almost 72% of the vote. I think they should move all of the prisoners from Gitmo up to Alexandria for some true liberal compassion.

Bill Dupray on 2009-03-25 13:10:39

I think technically Alexandria is an independent city and not technically part of Arlington County, but they are contiguous and you are right, they are so liberal, they make the Socialists blush in envy.

writergrrl on 2009-03-31 16:54:28

Jim,

Alexandria is not part of Arlington County. It is an independant city which answers only to itself, no larger county.

The issues raised by the mayor are the issues that any community would face under the same circumstances. They should find a max security prison in a more isolated area, farther from residents and businesses and fancy new hotels.

Surely there's a jail out in the middle of a corn field somewhere...

dusanmal on 2009-04-01 00:36:46

And why would you treat farmers of those corn fields as a less important human beings than the city folk? Also, why wouldn't you think that those farmers and their families would protest and oppose terrorist in their village, particularly as most rural areas have voted against Obama...

If in the USA, terrorists should be located in a jail in the city with highest support for Obama. People who have mostly voted for Obama have caused terrorist relocation and should have the consequences.

Maybe they could be sent to Fairfax Co...they could be on the faculty at the Islamic Saudi Academy.

Bill Dupray on 2009-03-25 13:27:13

Maybe they are alumni.

Stevie on 2009-03-26 09:57:58

I thought those guys weren't "terrorists" anymore!?!! Funny how they get labeled like that by the Libs when things start getting personal. Hmmm. I also thought these detained delicate misunderstood souls need justice - what a better place for them to have their glorious "fair shake" than at the center of American power, by those so concerned for their care? I think it's perfect. How dare you complain about your traffic jams and loss of business when these people's human rights are in jeopordy!!! (You shouldn't be driving a car anyway - walk, or ride a bike you consumptive monster!)

/sarc off

This is just like the Nantucket windmills... YOU need to accept and support wind energy, just don't let it mess up the view from my mansion!

antne on 2009-03-26 11:08:56

HAHAHA, chickens come home to roost.

avery on 2009-03-27 17:06:40

Naturally as a Fairfax resident I am hating this a lot, but on the other hand I will enjoy ALL the discomfort it causes in those around me in my heavy kool-aid neighborhood. I hope to concern troll them relentlessly.

davga on 2009-03-28 23:16:29

I couldn't believe it when I first heard about the BO administration's move to close the detention center at GITMO. My first thought was..."IF not GITMO, then where?" Today I have my answer. And it seems very fitting, in an ironic way. OK, so this makes me chuckle, but at the same time it would not surprise me if the venue was changed all of a sudden.

  • NY23d: Hoffman makes it official: he'll run for...

Douglas L. Hoffman rode a strong wave of conservative activism to a second-place finish in last fall's special election in the 23rd Congressional District. Now the Lake Placid accountant — and adopted son of the Tea Party movement — is back for a second try, but not without some competition. Mr. Hoffman formally entered the race for the Republican nomination Monday, telling his supporters in a letter posted to his Web site that he "will defeat Bill Owens" if there's a rematch. Listen to our interview with Doug on Liberty Pundits.

  • Smackdown time - The Hill: Alexander, Gregg thr...

Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and ranking Republican Finance Committee member Judd Gregg (N.H.) said they will force votes on virtually every sentence of the healthcare reform bill to overcome Democrats' parliamentary maneuver. Gregg said Republicans would force votes on a provision in the 1974 bill that says reconciliation can only be used to amend laws, plus another longstanding Senate rule that says reconciliation can only be used for budget-related issues, plus yet another Senate rule that says 60 votes are necessary to waive the budget-only rule. Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) sent a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that insisted he had 41 votes for the last roadblock, thereby denying Democrats the magic 60.

  • Dems give up on flipping Stupak 12

House leaders have concluded they cannot change a divisive abortion provision in President Barack Obama's health care bill and will try to pass the sweeping legislation without the support of ardent anti-abortion Democrats. A break on abortion would remove a major obstacle for Democratic leaders in the final throes of a yearlong effort to change health care in the United States. But it sets up a risky strategy of trying to round up enough Democrats to overcome, not appease, a small but possibly decisive group of Democratic lawmakers in the House.

  • Senate Parliamentarian: Obama must sign bill as...

The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that President Barack Obama must sign Congress’ original health care reform bill before the Senate can act on a companion reconciliation package, senior GOP sources said Thursday. The Senate Parliamentarian’s Office was responding to questions posed by the Republican leadership. The answers were provided verbally, sources said. House Democratic leaders have been searching for a way to ensure that any move they make to approve the Senate-passed $871 billion health care reform bill is followed by Senate action on a reconciliation package of adjustments to the original bill. One idea is to have the House and Senate act on reconciliation prior to House action on the Senate’s original health care bill.

  • House votes overwhelmingly to investigate Pelos...

The House voted Thursday to open an ethics investigation into what and when House Democratic leaders knew of allegations of sexual harassment against former Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.). The House overwhelmingly backed a privileged resolution offered by GOP Leader John Boehner (Ohio) that will have the Ethics Committee look into what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and other Democratic leaders and staffers knew about allegations of sexual harassment against Massa, and when they became aware of the situation. The Republican resolution came amid reports that members of Pelosi's staff had been allegedly been notified of the situation in Massa's office as early as last year.

  • House GOP votes to ban all earmarks

This would be called leading while in the minority. The Dems only ban some earmarks. GOP bans 'em all.
House Republicans approved a conference-wide moratorium on earmarks on Thursday one day after a House committee enacted a ban on for-profit earmarks. The Republican's moratorium is more extensive than the House Appropriations Committee's ban in that it applies to all earmarks for all members of their caucus. "For millions of Americans, the earmark process in Congress has become a symbol of a broken Washington," they said. "We believe the time has come for House Republicans to adopt an immediate, unilateral moratorium on all earmarks."

  • Gallup: Record number of people believe Global ...

There is lots of good stuff in this poll. Support for the Warmists is dropping off a cliff (or off a melting glacier, if you prefer).
Gallup's annual update on Americans' attitudes toward the environment shows a public that over the last two years has become less worried about the threat of global warming, less convinced that its effects are already happening, and more likely to believe that scientists themselves are uncertain about its occurrence. In response to one key question, 48% of Americans now believe that the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated, up from 41% in 2009 and 31% in 1997, when Gallup first asked the question.
That increase to 48% is fully 7 points higher than last year, which was also a record high.

  • Dem Rep Holden (PA) - No

The good part is the breadth of his No - read on: Holden, D-17, voted against the health care reform bill last year. However, another vote will likely be held soon, as the House appears set to pass the Senate's version of the bill. Johnson and others believe Holden is likely having "his arm twisted" by Democratic leaders eager to turn his "no" vote to a "yes" vote the second time around. However, in a telephone interview Wednesday night, Holden said his position will not change. "I will not vote for the Senate bill," Holden said. "It makes significant cuts to Medicare and Medicaid ... and the restrictions on (federal funding for) abortion are not as strong."

  • VA set to outlaw individual mandates - 34 more ...

The Virginia General Assembly has given final approval to a bill that would make it illegal for the government to require individuals to purchase health insurance, a measure intended to conflict with Democratic efforts to reform health care in Washington. Thirty-four other states are weighing similar legislation to block the individual mandate, which is an element of bills that have passed both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. But Virginia is the first state to complete legislative action on such a bill.

  • 0-3 Obama says a "yes" vote worth a presidentia...

These people stop at nothing to buy what they want: "At the same time, Obama intends to lobby wavering House Democrats to vote for a Senate version of the legislation and to support the subsequent reconciliation process, which Republicans have characterized as an unjustified use of majority power. Among the rewards Obama is ready to offer, White House officials said, are election-year visits to competitive congressional districts, where a presidential appearance can bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds."
