Let's just put this out there right now. If Liz Cheney wants to be president, she's got my vote. She is asked by Norah O'Donnell about the "torture" techniques and Cheney astutely denies the premise that it is torture at all. She points out that the very same techniques, including waterboarding, are done to our own military as training for being captured. Therefore, by definition, it cannot be torture. She also points out that the techniques were very effective in gaining vital intelligence, which prevented future attacks.
By the end, O'Donnell is unhinged, foaming at the mouth, and yelling at Cheney.
This is the best defense of the enhanced interrogation techniques I have heard to date, other than the ones I made to Clyde in our podcast yesterday.

From a debating standpoint, she is clearly her father's daughter.

Holy hell where have they been hiding her the past 8 years?
They could have used her to counter-act all the lies being said about the Admin since 2003.
*frustration*
She's not out there for kicks defending daddy. She's got her eyes on some sort of prize. Hope I get a chance to vote for her.
Your headline is accurate. Nora was prepared and gave it her best shot but Nora had her head handed to her It was a joy to watch. "Nora you are reading a headline; you are not reading the memos". "There is no owning up - we are proud of the program". That is what you are saying, not what I am saying". I love it
What are the credentials which make Ms Cheney an expert witness on this torture questioning?
Was she present when any of this took place? Is she biased because her father is involved?
If you need to address the issue, best to interrogate the people that were actually involved. Don't waste our time with these "dramatic" interviews designed to gather viewers.
Glad you said that, AK. So no one should listen to word the dems say that were not actually there.
Glad that's settled.
O'Donnell is an emotional adolescent being corrected by a calm, intelligent adult and hating it.
I love it...Nora looked like that goofy CNN reporter at the Tea Party when her mask slipped.
These "dramatic interviews designed to gather viewers" are brought to you by, and are a product of MSNBC. Liz Cheney didn't decide to crash the party at MSNBC and input her thoughts - she was invited...probably with the hope that she'd crash and burn. Kind of fun to see the propaganda machine go off the cliff this time. I'm betting we won't see much of Liz Cheney on MSNBC anytime soon.
My definition of torture is that off a family who've forced to endure lectures about the civil rights of those who vaporized their mother or father on September 11, 2001. There are those in life who respond to issues and those who proactively attempt to head them off before they happen. In this obviously dangerous world, waiting for the next attack on America to happen is not an option. I'm not concerned with the human rights of those who's stated goal is to destroy America. They have chosen not to be a part of any civilized society - so they shouldn't enjoy the protections which (a few of us) take for granted.
Unless you actually do hate America, the whole waterboarding issue is a no-brainer. Which reminds me, why are we even wasting our time on this nonsense ?
If an enemy abides by the Geneva Convention, then we can reciprocate. If they do not, then the Geneva Convention ties our hands and makes us more vulnerable. What the CIA did to these guys is not only not torture, it was PG rated interrogation. I think it strikes a more than generous balance.
Norah is one dumb broad. If it works it wirks and who gives a flaming rats butt about the feelings of terrorists? waterboarding lets them off easy.
As a former US Army military man, I myself underwent waterboarding in training. YES it is REALLY uncomfortable, but, as Liz so brilliantly pointed out, IT IS NOT TORTURE. Then Norah made the HUGE mistake to mention that if we did "torture" what would our enemy do to our military if captured. Liz was RIGHT ON when she said, They cut off their heads. The left has been using this as a political ploy ONLY for their advantage and screw our own military just to satisfy their own agenda.
They make me sick.
Thank you for serving our country in such a meaningful way, Fred.
Waterboarding is a ploy for these clowns. Want to know our enemy? Remember Colonel William Higgins, USMC. I doubt many of the people reading here have ever heard his name.
I'll never forget the pictures.
Ms. Cheney made a very valid observation about the release of the memos. Now our enemies know how far we are going to be allowed to go to gain information and even protect ourselves.
This situation is so inane it is hard to believe. Any act that weaks our countries security and endangers our collective safety borders on TREASON.
Do you have a weapon at home for protecting you family? It is like calling in CNN (the communist news network) or MSNBS (merely supporting nonsense Barrack says) and telling to them to publicize that you keep your gun in the top left drawer of your dresser. But, no one has to worry because you would never use it. YOU JUST DEFEATED ITS WHOLE PURPOSE and rendered it ineffective.
Now any crook or crazy that whats that junk knows that you have no intention of defending yourself or your family. God Help Us! Can we survive four years of this insanity?
My favorite part is where Kool-Aid Barbie starts shrieking "Listen to yourself! Listen to yourself!".
Note to Nora -- read the original source before you get in the ring.
She (Cheney) is full of [edited] for part of that. Easily dismissing the acts as NOT torture is pure lying. You could say that school children waterboard each other on the playground, but that doesn't mean it can't be torture.
Also just because there may or may not be some good intel gathered from it [also] doesn't mean it's not torture. There is still the act of torture being involved, so you can't just deny it or avoid it by saying they got some information.
By the way, how does it help our enemies to know that torture happens? Does it mean they will now employ robotic breathing apperatuses that will make waterboarding inneffective? It doesn't matter what they know for this kind of stuff, because it doesn't have anything to do with security.
why do you libs curse so much?
you write - By the way, how does it help our enemies to know that torture happens?
well, keyboard name, the real issue is that they know we won't do anything to make them uncomfortable. they know that with libs in charge they can do whatever they want, and the worst that will happen will be words.
Iraq deaths at 7 month high. The Palestinian Authority walking from Egypt and going to Iran for counsel. Iran imprisoning an American journalist. Russian troops patrolling inside Georgia. Taliban marching on Pakistan capital.
Hunh. Your candidate-now-president is full of [edited] that he can manage his way through these situations.
Norah O'Donnell is a great example of the classic clueless liberal who thinks they know what they're talking about before being utterly destroyed by the facts.
The sad part is, Norah will never change. Liberalism has "infected" people like her and there is no cure - and that is why this country is going to hell in a handbasket.
Recent headlines are full of stories about torture. Writers
seem to be surprised that torture was being used on
detainees suspected of being involved in terrorist activity.
This is nothing new. Torture has been going on since
recorded history. Spartacus, Jesus, and millions of others
rebels were tortured. It was done as punishment to break
their wills before murdering them. This practiced should be
stopped. Nobody but Sadistic monsters benefit from it.
Some are saying that that the recent torture of detainees
was used to gather information that was useful in
protecting the nation. But there has been no proof that a
single bit of that information was useful. There have been
other reasons for torturing hundreds of detainees. New
evidence is surfacing that false confessions were used to
give a valid reason for the invasion of Iraq. There is a wide
spread investigation now going on to get at the truth. It is
feared that the answer will be that it was done for the joy of
the Sadists in power. This should come as no surprise.
Sadism is the norm in most areas of life and it is found
most often in wartime. Many join the military for the
opportunity to express themselves.
The Sadist is feared most by prisoners because he wants
more than information or a confession. He wants to torture
his victims until there is no resistance or cries of pain. This
might take many months. But once his victims becomes
silent and do not scream in agony the Sadist loses interest.
The prisoners becomes useless and the monster looks for
healthy replacements. Those that were water boarded over
one hundred times until silenced were the healthiest of the
victims. It took many months to obtain their silence. They
were broken, rehabilitated, and could go free.
School yard bullies graduate into the big time when they
gain a position of power in the workplace. A sadistic boss
can make the lives of his employees miserable by
constantly threatening to fire them. But unfortunately some
bullies get absolute power when given the job of torturing
prisoners of war. Their first job is to make sure their
victims are well fed and kept healthy. This gives them the
opportunity to interrogate them endlessly. Confessions of
guilt do not end the torture. The sadist stays with his victim
until there is no resistance. A broken prisoner is of no use
to the grown up school yard bully
Melvin, thank you for taking the time to write. I respect your opinion, but it is not the same as mine.
1. "Some are saying that that the recent torture of detainees was used to gather information that was useful in protecting the nation." I disagree that torture was used. I've studied torture perpetrated by governments, in particular that used by the Brits against the IRA. What we did was not torture.
2. "But there has been no proof that a single bit of that information was useful." I know you don't mean this as self-serving, but on balance it is. We learn from former VP Cheney that proof does exist, but it is classified. He asked for it to released and has been refused. So we have a president that will release information that puts our country in a bad light, but holds back information that would show us the balance. I find Obama's acts traitorous in this situation.
This is one more example that the press has not learned its lesson with respect to bullying the Cheney women. They can stand on their own two feet and refuse to be intimidated.
Every time one of the Cheney women is featured in the news my memory brings me back to the day when Lynn Cheney turned the tables on Wolf Blitzer. He tried to bully her during an interview on national TV and she artfully humiliated him to the point of him being speechless. It was a sight to behold and I laughed until tears came to my eyes. Wolf was humbled and he deserved it.
From that time on each time I hear the name Wolf Blitzer I form a picture in my mind of Blitzer slinking off to a cave with his tail between his legs and licking his wounds.
Dick and Lynn taught Liz well. I'm sure they are proud of their daughter.
Wow. She is incredible isn't she? I've made similar arguments on my own blog as having gone through survival training myself in the air force. But, it just goes to show - no matter how well laid out the facts are for these libs - they still have their own emotional beliefs that refuse to allow the facts to get in the way as evidenced by Nora's response "So, if we didn't torture our own people, does that mean we tortured other people?" She just doesn't get it.
Liz Cheney worked for the State Department. And Nora O'Donnell's credentials are.... what? I mean aside from a biased reporter who works for the state run media.
McCain now finds himself jammed, moving starkly ? and often awkwardly ? to the right, apparently in an effort to gain favor among the same voters whom Mr. Hayworth, a consistent voice for the far right, could pull toward him like taffy come summer. McCain now sharply criticizes the bailout bill he voted for, pivoted from his earlier position that the Guant?namo Bay detention facility should be closed, offered only a muted response to the Supreme Court?s decision undoing campaign finance laws and backed down from statements that gays in the military would be O.K. by him... ?John is undergoing a campaign conversion,? Mr. Hayworth said. Hayworth?s radio-personality bluster and big emotions.. may now have a part in the greater populist narrative that threatens many of the nation?s more centrist Republicans.

Iran said Tuesday that it had begun producing higher-grade enriched uranium, marking a new and potentially dangerous turn in Tehran's confrontation with the West over its nuclear ambitions... U.S. National Intelligence Director Dennis C. Blair told the House intelligence committee last week that "Iran has the scientific, the technical, the industrial capacity to produce enough highly enriched uranium for a weapon in the next few years and eventually to produce a nuclear weapon. The central issue is a political decision by Iran to do so."

I wouldn't want my fingerprints on anything this administration or congress proposes. Reid told reporters the bill would be introduced on Tuesday, and that it would include an extension of the tax breaks... Reid did not say how expensive the jobs bill would be. The Senate had been considering a package of roughly $80 billion. The House passed a larger jobs bill before Christmas, but now plans to unveil a different bill independent of that package, which did not garner Republican support.

Back in November, the House passed its health care bill by a narrow 220 to 215 margin, with 39 Democrats voting against it. Since then, the one Republican who voted for it ? Joseph Cao ? has indicated that he would not support the bill a second time around given the weaker language on abortion in the Senate version. In addition, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler already retired prematurely. Factor in Murtha?s death today, and Pelosi is down to 217 votes ? one short of passage. To pass the bill at some point in the next few months, she?ll need to flip a Democrat who is already on record voting against the bill.

Don't think that Republicans can't be sucked in when an anti-Wall Street lynch mob gets its blood up. Recall that Sarbanes-Oxley, the devastating antigrowth response in 2002 to the Enron and Worldcom scandals, was passed with virtually unanimous support by Republicans in Congress, and signed by a Republican president. Recall that last year 85 House Republicans voted for a 90% tax on bonuses for any employee of any bank that took more than $5 billion in TARP money. Investors got some good news last Friday. Stocks resisted following through on Thursday's sharp plunge after (Congress) reached an impasse on bank re-regulation. That's a nice down payment on what investors need a lot more of now: proof that the GOP won't join Democrats in a populist rush to seek revenge against Wall Street.

Just two years after Mr. Obama helped his party pull in record Wall Street contributions ? $89 million from the securities and investment business, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics ? some of his biggest supporters, like Mr. Dimon, have become the industry?s chief lobbyists against his regulatory agenda. Republicans are rushing to capitalize on what they call Wall Street?s ?buyer?s remorse? with the Democrats. And industry executives and lobbyists are warning Democrats that if Mr. Obama keeps attacking Wall Street ?fat cats,? they may fight back by withholding their cash.

The Dow, down almost 104 points, had its 10th triple-digit move in 16 trading days. Shares of big banks pulled the market lower, extending a slump that has led to four straight weekly losses.I can't, for the life of me, understand why bank stocks would be dropping. Inexplicable.

Contrary to President Obama's promises, voters say special interests have more influence on the political process now than they did a year ago, according to a new poll. The poll, paid for by groups looking to curb the Supreme Court's recent campaign finance ruling, found that majorities of both Republicans and Democrats say special interests have increased their influence since the president took office, and they say Mr. Obama has not done enough to fight back.

If the starting point for this meeting is the job-killing bills the American people have already soundly rejected, Republicans would rightly be reluctant to participate,? the pair explained in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. They also said President Barack Obama should remove reconciliation from the table. Using budget reconciliation rules to move healthcare reform in the Senate would mean Democrats would only need 51 votes on procedural measures instead of 60... On Sunday afternoon however, Obama refused to say he would start from scratch.
