Sen. Reid's solution: Store spent nuke fuel rods in 131 places instead of 1

"It's over with -- Yucca Mountain is gone," said Reid.
"I am proud that after over two decades of fighting the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump, the project is finally being terminated." See Reid's Senate page.
Obama's budget: "This proposal implements the Administration's decision to terminate the Yucca Mountain program while developing disposal alternative."
What are those alternatives? Currently, the 77,000 tons of high level nuclear waste that were supposed to go to Yucca Mountain are held in temporary surface storage facilities located at 131 sites in 39 states. Now that's spreading the wealth, eh?
The NRC also has a list of 55 "Locations of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations." Here's a map of those locations:

The Yucca Mountain project had suffered many setbacks such as the discovery in 2005 that emails sent by a U.S. Geological Survey staffer between May 1998 and March 2000 "indicated that he had fabricated documentation of his work," the USGS said in a statement at the time.The staffer was preparing computer models on water infiltration and climate at Yucca Mountain that relate to the potential for the release of radioactivity from the repository.
Reid said at the time that the revelation "proves once again that DOE must cheat and lie to make Yucca Mountain look safe."
But I include that last quote because it is most telling to me. Reid is a pathetic, hollow person. He is vermin, which should not be taken as an insult by vermin as all I mean is that he is sub-human. He'll condemn organized Americans fighting healthcare in the most heinous terms, but will remain stone silent when the target of vicious attacks is then-President Bush. He has no credibility. As Mary McCarthy once infamously wrote of Lillian Hellman, "Everything she writes is a lie including 'and' and 'the'," so, too, is every utterance made by Reid a lie, including his flatulence emanating from both escape hatches (the intellectual content of which is often indiscernible concerning from which hatch said flatulence so emanated). To be clear, he doesn't "fart smart," he talks stupid. Junkyard-dog stupid, which, again, forgive me, is not meant as a slight against junkyard dogs.
In fact, let's dig into what that disgusting little troll Reid characterized as "cheat and lie to make Yucca Mountain look safe":
Hevesi denies having falsified any Yucca Mountain documents. Testifying under subpoena last July before the House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Federal Workforce and Agency Organization, Hevesi said, "I have never falsified any documents related to Yucca Mountain, or any other project."One incriminating email, dated 3/30/2000, reads, "The programs, of course, are all already installed otherwise the ___ would not exist. I don?t have a clue when these programs were installed. So I?ve made up the dates and names (see red edits below). This is as good as its going to get. If they need more proof, I will be happy to make up more stuff, as long as its not a video recording of the software being installed.?
Falsified test results? No. Provided test results where no test was performed? No. Filled in some blanks on when software was installed? Yes. Of Reid: "Everything he writes or says is a lie including 'and' and 'the'."
According to Obama's budget, Secretary Chu is to appoint a "Blue Ribbon Commission" to find the next home. Has he? No.
Alex Flint, the Nuclear Energy Institute's senior vice president for governmental affairs, commented today, "In the area of used nuclear fuel management, NEI recommends a program that includes at-reactor storage, centralized interim storage, research, development, demonstration and deployment of recycling technology, and eventual disposal of the byproducts resulting from recycling uranium fuel at a national repository."
Yeah, I know, blah blah blah. A 10th grader could have written the above quote.
"Nothing." That's the appropriate answer. Nothing will happen.
Yucca Mountain is situated in "the most extensively studied piece of geology anywhere on the planet. ... Located in a desert, the water table is deep and the area is sparsely populated. The mountain is also within the boundaries of the Nevada Test Site, where about 800 nuclear explosions have already taken place ? including more than 20 tests by the British."
And what will happen? Nothing. Well, except, of course, storage in a facility near you - virtually no matter you are in the United States.

This is what happens when voters continue to elect corrupt, incompetent ideologues to positions of power.
Reid thinks it's better to have nuclear waste sitting in cooling ponds upwind from New York City than under the god-forsaken deserts of Nevada. This is the plan of environmentalists, to make it so difficult to do business, that any opposed to them simply give up.

Didn't realize the implication's of Murtha's passing today, which include the following...Back in November, the House passed its health care bill by a narrow 220 to 215 margin, with 39 Democrats voting against it. Since then, the one Republican who voted for it ? Joseph Cao ? has indicated that he would not support the bill a second time around given the weaker language on abortion in the Senate version. In addition, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler already retired prematurely. Factor in Murtha?s death today, and Pelosi is down to 217 votes ? one short of passage. To pass the bill at some point in the next few months, she?ll need to flip a Democrat who is already on record voting against the bill.

A warning from my favorite economic analyst, Donald Luskin.Don't think that Republicans can't be sucked in when an anti-Wall Street lynch mob gets its blood up. Recall that Sarbanes-Oxley, the devastating antigrowth response in 2002 to the Enron and Worldcom scandals, was passed with virtually unanimous support by Republicans in Congress, and signed by a Republican president. Recall that last year 85 House Republicans voted for a 90% tax on bonuses for any employee of any bank that took more than $5 billion in TARP money. Investors got some good news last Friday. Stocks resisted following through on Thursday's sharp plunge after (Congress) reached an impasse on bank re-regulation. That's a nice down payment on what investors need a lot more of now: proof that the GOP won't join Democrats in a populist rush to seek revenge against Wall Street.
