Switzerland Votes To Give Away Free Heroin; Pot Still Banned

We gave up on the Swiss back in May when they decided that their Constitution gives plants the right not to be arbitrarily killed. Now we have more lunacy from the same bunch of fruitcakes.

The free provision of heroin to addicts won the overwhelming support of Swiss voters yesterday.

Projections based on early results indicated that 69 per cent of voters approved the programme, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, in a poll called under the country's system of direct democracy. . . .

Critics, including conservatives who called for the referendum, object to the annual cost of 26 million Swiss francs (£14 million), covered by the health insurance that all citizens pay and the Government covers for those who cannot afford it. . . .

There's your Obamacare in action for you. When Obama's Secretary of Universal Health Care decides that the taxpayers need to pay for heroin for junkies, they will point to Switzerland as a great example of the courage they had to help the victims of this evil menace. Remember, Europe is our model for Socialized Medicine.

The heroin scheme was introduced in response to a public outcry over the sight of addicts openly injecting the drug in public parks, as well as a rise in HIV and hepatitis infection. About 1,300 addicts are currently on the programme of carefully supervised doses, measured to satisfy their cravings yet avoid the risks of overdose and catching infections from dirty needles.

So they had a public outcry. And that was all. Bitching and moaning. About drug addicts shooting up in the park. Since bitching and moaning doesn't actually accomplish anything (ask Code Pink how all that anti-Iraq spleen venting worked out for them), the druggies kept doing it. That made the Swiss really mad, so they decided to get back at the insolent addicts by voting to give them free heroin. Ha. Take THAT!

It apparently never occurred to anybody in the entire country to just walk into the park, grab the 90 pound, skeletal, emaciated junkies and throw them in jail.

No wonder the Swiss remained neutral in the wars. Their conflict resolution skills need some work.

Here is how the program works.

The addicts attend one of the country's 23 heroin centres and, in groups of four, inject themselves under the watchful eye of a nurse. They leave after a few minutes — those with jobs going back to work.

So the heroin junkies come in for a fix on their lunch breaks (presumably that's heroin for lunch), then go back to work? Where? Driving a city bus? Teaching school-children?

But lest we think the Swiss are completely without principles (or spinal cords), they did draw the line when it came to marijuana.

While the Swiss have a more tolerant attitute towards drugs than most European countries, a parallel referendum to legalise small-scale cannabis growing and use was soundly rejected by a margin of about two to one. . . .

While the Swiss Government backed the heroin initiative, it opposed the call for marijuana legalisation because it feared that it could cause drugs tourism to Switzerland of the kind that is causing public disorder problems in border towns in the Netherlands. Oswald Sigg, a government spokesman, said: “This could lead to a situation where you have some sort of cannabis tourism in Switzerland because something that is illegal in the EU would be legal in Switzerland.”

Swiss MPs voted 106-70 against legalising cannabis for personal use last year.

Yeah you wouldn't want all the pot smokers coming into your country. That could become an epidemic. Oh wait . . .

Switzerland has recorded the highest level of cannabis use in Europe, according to a study last July.

Never mind.

I'm thinking the real dilemma will come when the Swiss have to decide between the poppy plants and the heroin addicts. See, the plants have a Constitutional Right not to be killed, but the junkies have a right to cut them down and shoot them up. A real Gordian knot, that.

Stupid greed is "protective tariffs, subsidies, guaranteed profits" and false philanthropy is "guaranteed jobs, relief and welfare schemes, public education, progressive taxation, free credit, and public works". Monopolism and Socialism are legalized plunder which Bastiat emphasizes is legal but not legitimate.
