Giving President Obama the power to run the American auto industry seems akin to giving your teenage son a bottle of Jack Daniels to share with his buddy before a Friday night on the town. Allowing The Pres to pass along much of that power to the UAW is handing your car keys to the buddy and hoping he will get your son home safely.
We haven't addressed the possible scandal involving which Chrysler dealerships are being chosen for closing because we haven't been sure how big of a deal it is. But I've seen enough to think it is a big deal. It passes the smell test of exactly what I think Obama is arrogant enough to do, knowing that there is next to no chance of the mainstream media seriously looking into it. And it fits his Chicago-style philosophy of political payback to those who cross him.
It also makes sense that the United Auto Workers, who pretty much own Chrysler, would be interested in providing payback to anyone who donates (and presumably votes) Republican.
In case you aren't aware, (and if you rely on the MSM for news, you probably aren't) many of the Chrysler closings look as shady as a rain forest - before humanity destroyed them all, of course. Specifically, Doug Ross has been particularly busy researching and compiling the evidence:
Closing Chrysler's Dealerships: The Reader's Digest Version
Dealergate: Stats demonstrate that Chrysler Dealers likely shuttered on a partisan basis
RED ALERT: Did anti-Obama campaign contributions dictate which Chrysler dealers were shuttered?
I highly suggest checking out those pieces in their entirety if you haven't yet done so, but will summarize some of the more interesting findings here.
1. The Chrysler dealership closings appear to be Obama's doing.
Quote from an attorney who Deposed Chrysler's president last week: "It became clear to us that Chrysler does not see the wisdom of terminating 25 percent of its dealers... It really wasn't Chrysler's decision. They are under enormous pressure from the President's automotive task force."
2. The dealers that are being closed have donated to Republicans and Obama's Democrat opponents at a ridiculously high rate.
I took all dealer owners whose names appeared more than once in the list. And, of those who contributed to political campaigns, every single one had donated almost exclusively to GOP candidates.
For a list of the top 50 donors, look at the third link.
I have thus far found only a single Obama donor (and a minor one at that: $200 from Jeffrey Hunter of Waco, Texas) on the closing list.
More:
Another review of all 789 closing dealerships, by WND, found $450,000 donated to GOP presidential candidates; $7,970 to Sen. Hillary Clinton; $2,200 to John Edwards and $450 to Barack Obama.
3. Evidence shows that some of the top performing dealers are among the ones being closed. One example:
As an employee of one of the affected dealerships... First, this isn't just Chrysler's decision. They were forced into bankruptcy by President Obama. When Chrysler emerges from bankruptcy the Federal Government will be a junior partner in the new Chrysler. This is SOCIALISM! Wake up people! This isn't about business it's about politics and control. My dealership is in the top 125 out of the 3500 plus dealerships nationwide...yet we are on the list. We are not small nor are we rural. We are in a large major metropolitan area. Our new vehicle inventory alone is well over $4.0 million. Is that small? Secondly, Chrysler is already "shopping" for dealers to take over the open "points" (another name for franchise) left by the closed dealerships. Again, you think this is just business. Lastly, and more importantly, every state has franchise law in affect that protect companies from this very thing - being forced out of business under the cloak of bankruptcy with out the benefit of due process. This is illegal!
4. It appears as if some Democrat-helping dealers are having their competition burned. Including some that are friends of Obama.
RLJ's owners "are Steve Landers (long-time car dealer, 4th-generation dealer), Thomas "Mack" McLarty (former Chief of Staff for President Clinton), and Robert Johnson (founder of Black Entertainment Television and co-owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats)... McLarty campaigned for Obama in 2008, and Johnson has given countless amounts of money to Democrats over the years."
You can read more on that in the 2nd link. Including this:
What are the odds of all of these RLJ dealerships remaining open while their competitors are wiped out? Maybe 1/10,000,000 of 1%. Yes, that's one ten-millionth of one percent.
5. Libs are going into their "nothing to see here" mode:
Thedronesliberalsprogressives are seething. They're sobbing hysterically at websites like...
6. Senators from each party are demanding investigation. OK, exactly one from each party.
I think this is perfect. Clyde mentioned seeing that majority Republican donors were only a slightly higher percentage among the closed dealers than the ones that will be allowed to stay in business. It could sound plausibly harmless to most casual observers. But having looked at small business donors, I know that most grease the wheels of both parties, even if they lean more heavily to one than another. The likelihood of there being a $450K to $200 difference among closed dealerships is ludicrous to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear.
Wait til you see how our Porkulus money ends up being spent. Obama's goal is clear, and inevitable. It's payback time. Time to pass the car keys to a Democrat friend, hope you can stay off the fuzz's radar for the next four years, and keep the Jack Daniels for yourself.

Auto dealerships are typically small businesses, and as such tend to favor Republicans. Pretty sure it's not typically $500,000 to $200, though. You can find both lists of dealers at the bottom of the page here: http://www.allpar.com/news/index.php/2009/05/chrysler-dealers-to-be-cut-and-kept/

Not good so far!
Time for this terrible business plan to be put to pasture.
The share of the blame comes as cracks are beginning to show in Emanuel’s once-impregnable political armor... on Capitol Hill he’s under fire for poor execution of the president’s healthcare agenda in the Senate... Senate Democrats grilled White House advisers last week during a special Senate Democratic retreat, expressing frustration over the lack of a clear plan. While Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) ripped chief political strategist David Axelrod, Senate Democrats say Emanuel, who was more closely involved in managing negotiations in Congress, also deserves scrutiny.

Michelle Obama defended her husband against some of his most vocal critics, saying President Obama did a "phenomenal" job this year and that change is a long-term process. The first lady talks about her nationwide campaign called "Let's Move." "I think my husband has done a phenomenal job staying on course, looking his critics in the eye, coming up with clear solutions against staying the course," Michelle Obama told Robin Roberts in an exclusive morning television interview on "Good Morning America." "That's what leadership is. But people have the right to criticize the President of the United States."Let me finish that last thought for you, Michelle. I see you rubbing your hands together and thinking, "Yes, for now people have the right to criticize him, but we're working on changing that."

In his letter, being sent out to Arpaio supporters today as part of a 100,000-person national direct mail drop, the sheriff calls Hayworth's decision to challenge McCain "courageous." And he pledges to help Hayworth "every step of the way." "Senator McCain has served this country admirably but it's time to replace his moderate or even liberal positions on taxes, the border, social causes and big bank bailouts with a consistent conservative like J.D.," Arpaio continues. "After years of running over Republican principles his entire career no election year conversion to our way of thinking will save his campaign from voters that want conservatives to be a part of the solution rather than part of the problem," he says.

McCain now finds himself jammed, moving starkly — and often awkwardly — to the right, apparently in an effort to gain favor among the same voters whom Mr. Hayworth, a consistent voice for the far right, could pull toward him like taffy come summer. McCain now sharply criticizes the bailout bill he voted for, pivoted from his earlier position that the Guantánamo Bay detention facility should be closed, offered only a muted response to the Supreme Court’s decision undoing campaign finance laws and backed down from statements that gays in the military would be O.K. by him... “John is undergoing a campaign conversion,” Mr. Hayworth said. Hayworth’s radio-personality bluster and big emotions.. may now have a part in the greater populist narrative that threatens many of the nation’s more centrist Republicans.

Iran said Tuesday that it had begun producing higher-grade enriched uranium, marking a new and potentially dangerous turn in Tehran's confrontation with the West over its nuclear ambitions... U.S. National Intelligence Director Dennis C. Blair told the House intelligence committee last week that "Iran has the scientific, the technical, the industrial capacity to produce enough highly enriched uranium for a weapon in the next few years and eventually to produce a nuclear weapon. The central issue is a political decision by Iran to do so."

I wouldn't want my fingerprints on anything this administration or congress proposes. Reid told reporters the bill would be introduced on Tuesday, and that it would include an extension of the tax breaks... Reid did not say how expensive the jobs bill would be. The Senate had been considering a package of roughly $80 billion. The House passed a larger jobs bill before Christmas, but now plans to unveil a different bill independent of that package, which did not garner Republican support.

Back in November, the House passed its health care bill by a narrow 220 to 215 margin, with 39 Democrats voting against it. Since then, the one Republican who voted for it — Joseph Cao — has indicated that he would not support the bill a second time around given the weaker language on abortion in the Senate version. In addition, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler already retired prematurely. Factor in Murtha’s death today, and Pelosi is down to 217 votes — one short of passage. To pass the bill at some point in the next few months, she’ll need to flip a Democrat who is already on record voting against the bill.

Don't think that Republicans can't be sucked in when an anti-Wall Street lynch mob gets its blood up. Recall that Sarbanes-Oxley, the devastating antigrowth response in 2002 to the Enron and Worldcom scandals, was passed with virtually unanimous support by Republicans in Congress, and signed by a Republican president. Recall that last year 85 House Republicans voted for a 90% tax on bonuses for any employee of any bank that took more than $5 billion in TARP money. Investors got some good news last Friday. Stocks resisted following through on Thursday's sharp plunge after (Congress) reached an impasse on bank re-regulation. That's a nice down payment on what investors need a lot more of now: proof that the GOP won't join Democrats in a populist rush to seek revenge against Wall Street.

Just two years after Mr. Obama helped his party pull in record Wall Street contributions — $89 million from the securities and investment business, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics — some of his biggest supporters, like Mr. Dimon, have become the industry’s chief lobbyists against his regulatory agenda. Republicans are rushing to capitalize on what they call Wall Street’s “buyer’s remorse” with the Democrats. And industry executives and lobbyists are warning Democrats that if Mr. Obama keeps attacking Wall Street “fat cats,” they may fight back by withholding their cash.

The Dow, down almost 104 points, had its 10th triple-digit move in 16 trading days. Shares of big banks pulled the market lower, extending a slump that has led to four straight weekly losses.I can't, for the life of me, understand why bank stocks would be dropping. Inexplicable.

I was about to do a piece on this myself, but I cant find an answer to one pressing question.
Are dealerships, for whatever reason, bastions of the GOP? Is it possible that for some odd reason car dealerships lean republican across the board? Can we find the donor lists of those dealerships still open, especially those that are losing money.
If we can prove that dealerships differ in donation, we got a case.
