- You completely miss the point of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). First off, there are anti-ballistic missile measures out there, so not all warheads will even get out of the silos, let alone hit their target.
Second, not all nukes are strategic ballistic missiles. Some are tactical and dropped by aircraft. Other are launched by submarines which can be sunk. So you have more to account for any conceivable loss of inventory, especially a surprise first strike.
Third, there is the concept of overkill for a reason. Some people, like deranged dictators, don't understand that it only takes one hit to wipe his city off the map. Others would consider it an acceptable loss as scary as that sounds.
So having "too many" is the point. If we were ever to be attacked by nuclear means, no matter how big the incoming attack, there will be enough surviving weapons to kill the enemy as well. No, not a pretty scenario, but it kept another world war from happening.

Besides, Cameron has been on this project for more than 10 years in some form or another. What the first link misses in the quote is "Cameron said yesterday that the theme was not the main point of Avatar, but added that Americans had a “moral responsibility” to understand the impact that their country’s recent military campaigns had had."
To me that equates the same as "the glaciers are melting" with "man-made global warming".
I went for two reasons. One, the story was decent enough, but mostly because it was a technological marvel as most Cameron movies are. I'm not defending any liberal views Cameron may have, but Sicko this isn't.

- I don't know if I would agree with that. Not every soldier needs to have a weapon with them at all times. While all military personnel are trained in firearms, not all use firearms for their basic everyday duties. Think clerical, medical, maintenance, etc. An Air Force installation is even lower. I would venture to say that 99.5% of the USAF does not have a firearm issued at any time in their career. Add to that, that the military probably doesn't even have enough weapons to issue to every soldier.
Besides, there is a reason that there is security police/military police (name depends on which branch). That isn't to say that personnel shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms, but issuing every one is probably not practical.
What I would like to know, and granted I haven't kept up with it too much, is why a regular police officer was the one who responded? Where were the MPs? Why was a civilian police offer allowed to have a firearm on a federal installation? I'm glad she was there, but something is wrong with that picture.

To piggy back on what Bill said, yes employers use insurance as a competitive measure. Now, they won't all drop insurance immediately, but over time they will. Which would you rather have, employers dropping employees as a cost cutting measure or insurance as a cost cutting measure? Not only will employers cut insurance to save costs, but the employees will slowly opt out as well for the same reason. Why pay a portion of an employer system when one can get it "for free"? The more that opt out, the more likely the employer will cut it as costs will rise with fewer employees and thus it makes sense to drop it completely.
This same scenario happened last year in Hawaii on a smaller scale. They offered child insurance. People opted out of their own coverage for their children in exchange for the state run version. The verdict? The state canceled it because it cost too much.
As for that common denominator you speak of, again you only have to look at other countries to see how bad that setup really is.

However, what the democrats don't realize or don't want to say, is that many employers will drop insurance altogether. Why shouldn't they if there is a public option? When that happens you will no longer have the coverage you once had. The president keeps saying you will be able to keep your doctor. That's nice, but you won't be able to keep your same coverage.
We have a national identity system already, it is called the social security number. It doesn't take more government to prevent non-citizens from getting insurance they shouldn't be getting.

The volt has a 12 gallon fuel tank. The 40 miles on a charge was determined because most people only drive ~40 miles a day in the city, so therefore you would never hit the gas engine (which unlike other hybrids, is only a generator in the volt). So in theory you could have infinite MPG if you never went more than 40 miles in a day. The 230 MPG is a play on math, no doubt and GM is actually at odds with the EPA about how to rate the vehicle. I can understand that and no matter how it is officially rated it won't be correct. It all depends on driving habits.
The EV1 was ahead of its time. The Volt is expensive for sure, but a lot has changed in technology since the EV1 and people are actually buying hybrid/electric cars these days.

Employers provide insurance for one primary reason, to get and retain employees. That incentive will be lost. Then as more people get on the free bandwagon the taxes/cost will skyrocket.

About the only time a driver would get into trouble was if he intentionally rammed his car into another like you see in the movies. Bumping is a different thing and happens fairly often. What you see with these two guys is quite common. Moving that close together actually makes them both faster, then the guy behind tries to slingshot around the first guy. He was moving to get position and bumped the first guy causing the spin. I highly doubt it was intentional though.
