On October 20th, 2009, the “Helsinki Vampires” came to the Blender Theatre at Gramercy in New York City, much to the delight of their dark children in America. Finland-based The 69 Eyes began touring the United States in support of their latest full-length album, Back in Blood. Returning to the city where frontman Jyrki 69 said “where it all started,” the band didn’t hesitate to express their love for New York City. “Let me tell you guys something. The 69 Eyes are all about New York f**king City,” said Jyrki on stage, in between songs. With a combination of the red velvet drapes and darkness of the vintage theatre, as well as the dark swooning sounds of opening bands The Becoming and Dommin, The 69 Eyes played a venue very fitting to their persona. ...

More from the daughter ... Evergreen Terrace have given fans a lot to offer with their latest record, Almost Home. Josh James, guitarist of Evergreen Terrace, explained, “It's a collection of us... getting into a room and just cranking up as loud as we can go at two in the morning, and just letting loose. These are the songs that came out.” The Jacksonville, Florida-based hardcore band have released four studio albums previous to Almost Home. With 2007's Wolfbiker, it was an effort to come to grips with new drummer Kyle Mims. Evergreen's newest release shows their understanding of each other, and musical compatibility as a group. On September 16th, 2009, Josh James and I sat in the band's van in the middle of a rainy night and talked about the September 29th album in detail. JM: In ...

Latest from the girl ... In early 2005, Brian “Head” Welch, lead guitarist and co-founder of nu-metal group KoRn, parted ways. Since leaving, Head is devoting his life to his daughter, to Christianity, and to expressing his spirituality through music and writing. In his debut record Save Me from Myself (2008), Head relays his past drug addictions, his alcoholism, and his beliefs. The album is eleven tracks of eye-opening, heart-wrenching, raw tunes that reflect Head's musical roots in old school KoRn albums. He also illustrates his life in two published books entitled “Save Me from Myself” (2007) and “Washed by Blood” (2008). With a hard life slipping off of his shoulders and a new light shining down on Brian “Head” Welch, the man has a new mindset and feels free to tell people about it. On August 29th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las ...

The First Battle of the Alamo was not the Last

My favorite local writer, Marcus, addresses an issue you'd have to be from west Texas to understand is cantankerous.

This one is a girl fight. Men will be wise to stand back.

The Shrine of Texas Liberty, the Alamo, is owned by the State of Texas. For 105 years, the Alamo has been managed and maintained by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas…The DRT…The Daughters.

The Daughters are 7,000 women descended from Texans here in 1836.

To their enduring credit, The Daughters have operated the Alamo shrine and museum without state aid, without deficit, and [almost] without scandal. The future is the issue.

My daughter's latest column ... In late 2005, Brooklyn-based outfit Suicide City was created by the hand of ex-Biohazard member Billy Graziadei and soon joined by ex-Groovenics vocalist Karl Bernholtz. The band began to flesh out with the involvement of Dan Lamagna on drums, ex-Groovenics guitarist AJ Marchetta, and ex-Kittie bassist Jen Arroyo. The five-piece band meshes punk and metal roots into their music, two genres that were sworn enemies during their births a few decades ago, and they also incorporate classical and even industrial into their sound. With the self-release of their EP 'Not My Year' featuring well known numbers such as “Give Me Your Pity” and “Undone,” Suicide City received critical acclaim and well-deserved recognition for their efforts. Following 'Not My Year' comes their first full-length with The End Records, 'Frenzy,' that is due to hit stores on August ...

Yeah, OK, I'm bored. I remember when Liz Taylor, Michael Jackson's grieving widow(er) was set to reveal it all on Larry King's show, I spent some time thinking about how it would unfold. No, didn't watch it. Yes, will move this to the Pub after a while. So here's your late night jollies ... TV and Movie Lands are all abuzz about Liz Taylor and Larry King doing an interview on May 30 to “tell all.” Much to my shock and horror, my latest suicide attempt went awry when I dropped my 12” black and white television into the tub – and then through some improbable cross-pollination of the tubes in the back, I was presented with the raw feed of the interview on some satellite uplink rather than fried. I was disappointed twice in ...

We'll move this to the After-Hours Lounge in a bit, but there's some good advice for your Independence Day celebrations, so let's go! I was strolling through the Gallery of Regrettable Food and found a gem: a 1959 recipe booklet from Knudsen Dairy Products. Yummy! How fun to see what they were eating as I was experiencing my first months post-partum. Let’s turn the pages (I’ll put the pics here – but you can read the source’s commentary, too. He’s pretty funny). The first item is, um, green, like a stagnant-pond green but without the promise of teeming life beneath. Oh my. It’s called, “Fruit Ring Mold with Dressing.” “Dressing”? ...

My daughter reviews a fresh metal band from Australia.

"Four years ago, melodic death metal band BerserkerfoX was a series of jam sessions between guitarists Ashish Kumar and Anannd Thambirajah in an apartment in Melbourne, Australia. It took two years before the group formed, complete with the addition of Daniel “Muzzi” Mozumder on vocals, Liam McRae on bass, and Rory O'Donnell on drums. Armed with demos and incredible ambition, the 5-piece band have rocked out numbers of venues within Victoria and received publicity on websites like Ultimate Guitar and Harm.us. With the release of their 3-track EP 'King Kong on Crack', we get a short, but intense taste of what to expect out of these guys before they release their first album."

While others start bands with hopes of becoming the center of the universe, Australian death metal band Kaamora (cah-mor-rah) was formed for self-enjoyment and was unintentionally tossed into the crowds' attention after selling out every copy of the band's demo. Following this great success, the five-piece group got together in the studio and recorded their debut EP 'Lambs to the Slaughter', which was a DIY effort as they produced it themselves and released it under their own label, RMF records, in May 2009.
