Sestak wasn't the only one offered a job - in violation of federal law

Chicago politics may derail the train. So fun. More questions being raised about the White House in the face of repeated allegations by Pennsylvania Democrat Senate Joe Sestak that he was offered a job by the Obama W.H. if he would agree not to run for the Senate against Arlen Specter; allegations, which CNS News noted recently, W.H. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has continued to dodge on camera over the last few weeks. Now Politico reports this morning that the top Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee says the Obama administration may have broken the law by offering Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) a job in order to persuade him not to mount a primary challenge against Sen. Arlen Specter. "While the White House may think this is politics as usual, what is spectacularly unusual is when ...

Gamecock: Rotten peaches in Georgia ain’t puny

Gamecock reviews his adopted home state, and finds it lacking ethically. Former Speaker of the House, Tip O'Neill, not one of my favorite politicians, used to say "all politics are local." While I did not like his policies, he was right about the root of political action. Those who follow my articles know my focus is mainly on the trillions of tax payer dollars controlled in Washington, D.C., and that I have very often described D.C. pork and much of state and local affairs as “puny” by comparison. No more! Gamecock announces the dawn of his grassroots government epiphany Events since my return to my adopted hometown encompassing Metro Atlanta, have made me increasingly aware that we are doing ourselves a great disservice by failing to understand politics in our own backyard. Brady Campaign demands Starbucks violate state law

Here's an interesting article out of AP: "THE CONTROVERSY: Recently, some gun owners have staged a campaign of walking into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. Gun control advocates have protested. "STARBUCKS' STANCE: Starbucks says it complies with state laws and won't ban guns from stores in states where there is an open-carry law. "RESPONSE: The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is holding a press conference in Starbucks' hometown of Seattle about its petition demanding that Starbucks declare its cafes 'gun-free zones.'" Let's make the stance generic: "We (Brady) do not like Law X, which allows certain behaviors to occur in public. We demand, therefore, that you (Starbucks, a private corporation) declare that the rights and privileges codified in ...

Rangel's losing the intra-party battle - gonna step down

Politico reports Rep. Charlie Rangel "is on the verge of losing his Ways and Means gavel – by choice or by force, permanently or temporarily – and is taking the night to review his options, according to Democratic insiders. As he emerged Tuesday night from a meeting in Speaker Nancy Pelosi's ceremonial office," Rangel "insisted that he is still the chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee." Politico notes that "rumors of Rangel's immediate removal coursed through the Capitol Tuesday evening after a Democratic leadership meeting but before Rangel gathered with Pelosi and their respective aides to discuss the situation in her office."

Roll Call, in an article published at 11:38 p.m. last night, says, "A senior Democratic source told Roll Call late Tuesday night that" Rangel "still plans to give up his gavel Wednesday despite his public protestations to the contrary. 'The long and short of it is he has decided to step down temporarily,' the source said."

Roundup of media coverage on Rangel Ethics Violation - Ouch!

Charlie's got issues ... Relieve the chairman of his gavel – New York Times: “Congressman Charles Rangel was far from humbled after the ethics committee admonished him for taking corporate-paid Caribbean junkets in violation of the House ethics code. Rather, the New York Democrat berated the panel’s leaders on the House floor. The moment was characteristic of Mr. Rangel’s arrogance throughout the investigation, which continues into more serious allegations about his official behavior. It is one more reason why Speaker Nancy Pelosi — who championed ethics reform — should stop protecting him and relieve him of his crucial role as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. … Mr. Rangel, the House’s designated master of fiscal accountability, already deserves to be stripped of his gavel.” Charlie the coward – New York Post: “This newspaper has had its share ...

For your consideration: Petitions on the KSM trial and CSPAN cameras in health debate

Heritage and RedState are asking Holder to reverse his decision to try the 9/11 mastermind in a civilian court in New York. They list a lot of great reasons. Here is just one.

Trying these terrorists in a civilian court would be a break with 200+ years of American jurisprudence. From British spies during the War of Independence to Nazi saboteurs caught on U.S. soil during World War II, we have tried those who make war against America in military, not civilian, courts. This change in policy sets a potentially catastrophic precedent. This would not happen with a military tribunal;
That petition is here. The "Let The Cameras In" petition is an attempt to expose the Obama lie (seen 8 times here) that CSPAN cameras would ...

Eight clips of Obama telling the CSPAN lie

The biggest bait and switch of the Obama phenomenon. He obviously had no intention whatsoever of broadcasting the health care debates on CSPAN. Instead, it has turned into the most significant, secretive power-grab in American history. At any point in these negotiations Obama could have shown he was true to his word and demanded the cameras be brought in. But instead, the charlatan has aided and abetted this scheme from Day 1.

The last line is telling: "One of my jobs as President will be to guide this process..."

And he did just that.

Obama's 'disingenuous' handling of Lockerbie

The Brits made a remarkable statement: Whitehall said US President Obama and Hillary Clinton's reaction to Abdelbaset Al Megrahi's release was 'disingenuous.' The real issue, however, has less to do with the specifics of the Lockerbie release than with Obama's Chicago roots. The Brits could just have soon as said, "Mr Obama, if you want to contact the Canadians and tell them that your upcoming campaign rhetoric calling for a renegotiation of NAFTA is just that - rhetoric - that is for the Canadians to choose public silence in light of your specious ethics. We, however, do not take ethical violations so lightly." Let's put the statement in context. When the British press uses the moniker "Whitehall," it is referring to the overall UK governmental administration. It's a broader term than referring ...

Secret testimony leaked: Sens. Conrad, Dodd lied

Secret testimony of closed-door Congressional hearings has been leaked to AP. The senators' story from previous public statements: Both senators have said that at the time the mortgages were being written they didn't know they were getting unique deals from Countrywide Financial Corp. A little more from the Dodd archives:

"As the Dodds have said from the beginning, they did not seek or expect any special rates or terms on their loans and they never received any. They were never offered special or sweetheart deals and if anyone had made such an offer, they would have severed that relationship immediately."
One does not deny getting deals unless one realizes the public stench would be repugnant. Countrywide's story - now delivered under oath:
Asked by a House investigator if ...

Of monkeys and men

A good friend of Patriot Room is Silent Majority. Robert E. has the goods on the lemur monkey fossil that supposedly fills the long-sought link between primates and humans. He correctly intones that the reason is not science but to exorcise (yikes!) the need for a Creator. Full disclosure? I'm a Christian of the worst kind - a Literalist, a Young Earther. The Bible says Moses stood before the waters and commanded them to part and they did - I believe it. Hook, line, and sinker. Lots of folks that are self-appointedly smarter than I am scoff at such banality. I occasionally pray for them, but not as often as I should. I sin like that. I can't seem to get rid of this self-determination concept where I accept ...
